Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

It still needs work, and some features don’t work properly—such as language switching—and certain aspects like interface stability, as it suffers from frequent crashes... There’s also an issue with file handling—sometimes files disappear for no apparent reason—and there are problems with fonts, as well as a noticeable slowness when opening programs; their app store is also sluggish... It would be a good distribution if it were more stable than it currently is, but the issues mentioned remain noticeable and detract from the user experience.

I've been using Pop!_OS intermittently for many years. It is highly optimized for coders with a particular workflow -- if that workflow is your workflow it will seem like a dream, like it was handcrafted especially for you.

If you're a general user with no specific agenda beyond browsing and office, it's still a very good OS. The bespoke COSMIC desktop is quickly gaining features (though it is not as refined as the much older and more mature GNOME -- not yet, anyway). It does some interesting things that you don't find implemented, or implemented as well, in GNOME. The auto-tiling system is the best there is, assuming you don't want to laboriously figure out something far more complicated like the i3 desktop. Basic programs and utilities are written in Rust and extremely quick to execute (as well as memory safe).

For me, however, petty idiosyncracies still annoy. In no particular order of importance ... when I boot up, Bluetooth is always turned on, though I turned it off previously. Screen sizes don't persist between app starts (except for full screen). There is no way to move window controls to the left -- the Windows-style default is what you get. The theming/styling can be somewhat brutalist and inelegant at times (see, e.g., COSMIC Files, the GUI file manager). No doubt, all of these will be tweaked, in time.

So, if you're wondering whether Pop!_OS with COSMIC is currently stable and usable -- absolutely. Will it do things that make you think fondly of Plasma or GNOME? Probably. Is it an audacious experiment for a made-in-America Linux computer manufacturer to take on? Absolutely. And kudos for that.

POP OS seems to be the only one of the many distributions I've tested that delivers excellent performance. Windows and games simply fly, and fonts, which are usually blurry or have varying scaling in Java, work perfectly.

All these parameters are crucial for working with a computer: the responsiveness to pressing a mouse button, switching between programs—the speed gives the feeling of flying and the almost instantaneous performance that I so valued in MacOS.

I think this distribution deserves consideration if you're looking for the fastest operating system optimized for gaming and high-quality, seamless computing.
